The Instagram Debate: How does it make you feel?

Recently I have been hearing more and more in the media about how bloggers are causing people depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues by painting a picture of a perfect life on their Instagram feed. That first sentence alone made me feel sick to my stomach, and also made me think. HARD. Am I contributing to this??

Let me start off by saying that is the EXACT opposite of what I am intending to do. I think I can speak for many other bloggers whom I know personally that the intention is quite the contrary; we create and share our visual stories to inspire others, to share new people, places, brands, products, outfits, home decor inspiration – the list goes on. Whatever our niche may be – we are sharing on those subjects because that is what we love!! The people following are looking for just that too, which is why we continue to share. It’s devastating to hear that it is having the opposite affect on some..

Life is FAR from perfect. My kids have meltdowns like any others, there are crappy days, there are moments when I break down and feel completely defeated – I just choose not to share photos of those moments. That doesn’t mean they are not happening. Everyone has their struggles!! So how can we as bloggers bring more truth and realism to this platform while still running our business?? Through captions and stories. Writing about those not-so-good moments, even if there is a pretty picture attached to it. I try to be as transparent as possible so that when I have the opportunity to meet someone in person, I am exactly the same as I am online.

I am by no means an expert on this subject, but I wanted to share a few thoughts on how to remove those negative feelings…

YOU are in control of who you follow. If someone does not bring you positivity or happiness, and makes you feel inadequate based on what they are sharing, DON’T FOLLOW THEM. That includes me! I can’t imagine causing more harm than good, and having no idea about it. Take the time to remove anyone who creates those negative feelings for you, and focus on those who do just the opposite.

Take a social detox. I do this from time to time, and it feels so good. Forget what everyone in your Instagram world is doing and focus on what’s in front of you. I’m always amazed at how much I can accomplish when I take a break for a few days and catch my breath. It’s important to not get caught up in it. At the end of day, as much as I LOVE instagram and all that is has to offer, it’s an app on our phone 😉

Communicate. As a blogger, we are putting ourselves out there, which in turn means we are exposing ourselves to criticism. It’s part of the job, and you develop a think skin pretty quickly. That being said, writing a hurtful comment is one thing and sharing constructive feedback is another. If you really enjoy someone’s content, but question something they have posted, start a conversation. I am always happy to answer my followers’ questions. It may be impossible to please everyone, but it’s important as a blogger to know how the photos are being perceived by those who engage with you.

I can see how these platforms can easily affect the younger generations especially, so it’s important for the conversation to keep on going. Keep sharing your truth!!
