Let me introduce you to my pretty little friend: The Bralette. This increasingly popular style of undergarment has established quite the name for itself. With easy wearability, and a soft, luxe feel. It screams romantic and comfortable in the same sentence.

I happen to come across Sewn Designs on Instagram, a local Vancouver brand owned by Designer Alesia Akehurst. Alesia’s designs stood apart from the rest in my opinion. The collection is not made up entirely of the traditional lace bralette; she plays with different patterns and materials. From florals to knit, lace and criss cross, every design offers their own unique aesthetic. I decided to reach out to Alesia, and learn more about her business.

How did it all begin? With a girl and her sewing machine. Alesia has sewn for many years, learning the ways from her Grandmother as a young girl. She began taking it up as hobby, making handbags. One day Alesia took on a new challenge; making her own bra. To her pleasant surprise, it was a success!! After her friends started inquiring about placing their own order for her new design, Alesia saw an opportunity and ran with it. When Sewn Designs was born, Alesia like many young entrepreneurs did not know what the future held for her new business. With a smart and ambitious head on her shoulders, Alesia has worked hard and continues to grow her small business, while receiving a wonderful response from both her North American and European customers. We look forward to seeing what’s next for this Vancouver born brand (including a loungewear collection, debuting this Spring!)

Don’t be mistaken.. these little bralettes are not just for the twenties something girl. If you are reading this and thinking, I’ve had a baby (or more than one), and there is no conceivable way this style is going to work, know that you are not alone in that thought. As someone who has had two babies now (and with a large chest), I had written off the idea of even trying one on. I envied every woman who popped up on my Instagram feed wearing one of these pretty little numbers. My thoughts have since changed. Well now I can promise that I won’t be throwing a blazer on top and posing as Sue Ellen Mischke anytime soon (google if need be), I have learned however that moms can easily wear these too. The feeling of comfort is what sold me, and the fact that the bralettes are beautiful handmade pieces makes them that much more appealing.

So, who wants to win the LAST wanderlust bralette featured above????!!! Sewn Designs and I are teaming up for an Instagram giveaway!! To enter, you must follow sewn designs (@sewndesigns) and myself (@thefamjewels). Check out this morning’s post for entry details! Contest ends Sunday, January 31st at 9pm PST. Good luck! xo
